The Monster Menagerie
A wizard's zoo.
The Wizard Morcant built this menagerie deep in the black forests of the Deepwood. He was fascinated by monsters that plagued the people of the kingdom and maintained it separately from his tower. Morcant is listed among the Golden Dead for failing to contact the Institute for a decade and it has since been a hundred years more.
THE FATE OF MORCANT
In truth the wizard actually is dead. He was slain by one of his monsters that escaped captivity. One of the creatures, a trapper, was smarter than Morcant anticipated and freed itself along with the others. Now the menagerie functions as a nest and haven for all manner of beasts, though they have spread out into the area and return only on occasion.
MORCANT’S RING
Morcant wore a ring of many wishes that he kept in case of emergencies. He was a savvy, prudent man excepting for his unusual pastime of monster collection. When the wizard stepped unknowingly upon the trapper, he was crushed by it almost instantaneously. A powerful mage was rendered helpless and unable to move as the stone-like creature snapped up and smothered him. Morcant’s body now sits beneath the trapper and his ring and remains now lie beneath the trapper.
